Raiders edge Oil Kings in a SO following 90 minute blackout at Rexall Place
It took over four hours for a winner to be decided, thanks to an nine minute power outage at Rexall Place, as the Edmonton Oil Kings dropped a 3-2 decision to the Prince Albert Raiders in Tuesday night's lone game in the WHL. Leon Draisaitl scored the shootout winner for the Raiders.

Edmonton - October 16, 2013 - It took over four hours for a winner to be decided Tuesday as the Edmonton Oil Kings (4-5-0-1) hosted the Prince Albert Raiders (7-4-1-0) , but when the dust settled, it was the Raiders walking off with a 3-2 shootout win at Rexall Place.

Reid Gardiner chipped a rebound past Oil King goalie Tristan Jarry on the power play with the Prince Albert net empty and just 16.6 seconds left on the clock.

The goal forced extra time in a game that was already running late after a massive power outage in north Edmonton caused a 90-minute blackout at the rink.

Leon Draisaitl scored the lone goal of the shootout as Cole Cheveldave stopped all three Oil Kings shooters to earn the win for Prince Albert.

“I thought we played pretty hard most of the game,” said Oil Kings Head Coach Derek Laxdal. “I thought we deserved a better fate. That penalty in the last couple minutes really hurt us. They pushed pretty hard and they did a great job of evening it up.”

The game started on a chippy note as Raider Jayden Hart was whistled for checking from behind on the first shift of the game for a hit on Curtis Lazar, and Mitch Moroz stepped in, dropping the gloves with Hart and delivering a knock-out punch. Hart had previously been suspended for a post-goal cross-check to Lazar when the teams met earlier in October in Prince Albert.

“I was just trying to give our guys a spark and obviously stick up for Curt,” Moroz said.

Shortly after the penalties were sorted out, things went dark in Rexall Place as the building lost all power. When the lights came back on 90 minutes later and play resumed, it was Prince Albert getting on the board first with a goal from Carson Perreaux.

Curtis Lazar tied it up in the second period on a penalty shot. Lazar dangled and faked a shot, only to have the puck slip off his stick and fortuitously between Cheveldave’s legs to make the score 1-1.

“Yeah, I mean, I got a little lucky there. I’d like to say I did it on purpose, but all in all, it went in,” said Lazar.

Mitch Moroz put the Oil Kings ahead in the third, redirecting a pass from Griffin Reinhart after an end-to-end rush from the Edmonton captain. It was Moroz’s team-leading ninth goal of the season and extended his point streak to eight games.

Jarry stopped 30 of 32 shots in a losing effort, while Cheveldave made 37 saves in the Raiders net.

The Oil Kings are back in action Friday when they visit the Red Deer Rebels for the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
