Winterhawks edge Broncos in wide open affair
Goals from five different Portland Winterhawks, including Nic Petan and Oliver Bjorkstrand, were just enough for the defending WHL Champs to squeak past the Swift Current Broncos by a score of 5-4 in Friday night Western Hockey League action.

Portland - October 19, 2013 - The Portland Winterhawks (6-3-0-1) picked up their third straight win with a 5-4 victory over the Swift Current Broncos (6-5-0-1) Friday at the Moda Center in front of 8,122 fans.

Swift Current opened the scoring at the 12:23 mark of the first on a goal by Connor Sanvido, but the Hawks tied it with 22.9 seconds left in the period when Brendan Leipsic went to the net on a give-and-go, took a feed from Nic Petan and beat netminder Eetu Laurikainen to make it 1-1 going into the second.

It wasn’t tied for long though, as just over a minute into the second period Alex Schoenborn and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored just 21 seconds apart as the Hawks jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Swift Current later tied the game on a pair of goals from Tanner LeSann and Graham Black, but the Hawks regained the lead at the 8:58 mark when Laurikainen kicked out a big rebound that Nic Petan collected and fired into the net to put Portland ahead 4-3, which remained the score going into the third.

As they did in the second, Portland struck early in the third when Dominic Turgeon scored 34 seconds into the period for his first goal of the season and a 5-3 Hawks lead. Swift Current got within one on a goal by Coda Gordon at the 7:47 mark to cut Portland’s lead to 5-4, but the Hawks shut the door from there to finish with the win.

Petan, Schoenborn, Leipsic and Derrick Pouliot all finished with two points apiece for the Hawks.

Brendan Burke earned the victory in net with 35 saves on 39 shots. Laurikainen took the loss for Swift Current, allowing five goals on 48 shots.

The Hawks open a season-high five-game road trip tomorrow night when they take on the Tri-City Americans in Kennewick, WA.
