Holmberg pots No. 15 and 16, as the Chiefs skate past Silvertips
Mitch Holmberg continued his season long assault on WHL goalies everywhere, potting two more goals en route to the Spokane Chiefs 4-2 victory over the Everett Silvertips. The native of Sherwood Park, Alberta not only leads all Western Hockey League scorers with 16 goals but also leads the league with 31 points in just 12 games.
Spokane - October 19, 2013 - Mitch Holmberg may be getting all the headlines, and rightfully so, but Friday night’s 4-2 victory in front of 4,759 fans over the Everett Silvertips at Spokane Arena belonged to the rookies.
Both Jacob Cardiff and Adam Hascic notched their first career WHL goals, as the rookies ended up being the difference in a close contest.
After Everett knotted up the game at two early in the third, Cardiff ended up with a loose puck in the right circle for the game-winning goal.
Seven minutes later, Hascic found a loose puck as well, this one a one-timer for the game’s final margin.
Holmberg put the Chiefs on the board first at the 7:31 mark on the first period. The goal marked his 100th career WHL goal. He picked up No. 101 later in the period as the right wing extended his point streak to 12 games. He now leads the WHL with 16 goals 31 total points this season.
Eric Williams played in his 150th career game while saving 17 of 19 shots. The Chiefs were one for two on the power play and a perfect six for six on the penalty kill.
The Spokane Chiefs will host the Victoria Royals tomorrow, Saturday, October 19th. The game begins at 7:05 at the Spokane Arena. The game will be preceded by Leinenkugel's HOCKtoberfest, outside Spokane Arena, beginning at 4:00.
