Edmonton - November 7, 2013 - Henrik Samuelsson had a goal and two assists and Tristan Jarry picked up his second shutout in as many nights as the Edmonton Oil Kings stayed hot on the road with a 5-0 win over the Victoria Royals Wednesday night.

The win, Edmonton’s third in a row, improved the Oil Kings to 11-7-0-1 on the season and 5-1-0-0 as they play eight straight on the road. The win puts the Oil Kings in a three-way tie for third in the WHL Eastern Conference, just two points back of first-place Medicine Hat.

“I thought for playing a hard game in Vancouver and then having to travel on the ferry this morning, I thought the guys responded real well and had a great first period,” said Oil Kings Head Coach Derek Laxdal.

Brett Pollock opened the scoring for the Oil Kings 4:50 into the first period as Samuelsson set him up in the slot and he beat Victoria goalie Patrik Polivka. Edgars Kulda made it 2-0 three minutes later as he and Samuelsson executed a shorthanded two-on-one for the team’s first shorthanded goal of the season.

Ben Carroll struck for his first WHL goal early in the second period, chasing Polivka with a short-side goal, while Cole Benson scored his first of the season early in the third to make it 4-0. Samuelsson rounded out the scoring with 5:02 to play, walking the red line and beating Victoria back-up Coleman Vollrath short side.

Reid Petryk, Lane Bauer and Mads Eller all picked up a pair of assists on the night, with Bauer and Eller recording their first ever multi-point games in the WHL. Cody Corbett extended his point streak to five games with an assist.

“We did a lot of simple things,” Laxdal said. “We did a good job of managing our game in the neutral zone and creating some lanes to get some pucks to the net. It was good to have everyone be a part of it, and it felt like a real team win.”

Unlike Tuesday in Vancouver when he was forced to make 37 saves, Jarry handled a lighter workload against the Royals (10-9-0-1), as the Oil Kings outshot Victoria 42-21 and clamped down defensively on the west coasters.

“I thought we did a better job in the D zone and the little bigger ice surface allowed us to skate more and the transition was much better. I thought we did a much better job of structure I our D zone,” Laxdal said.

It was Jarry’s third shutout of the season, tied for the league lead, and he has not allowed a goal in his past 168:10 of play, dating back to the first period against Calgary on Sunday. He now leads the league with a 2.09 goals-against average.

“He’s just been solid,” Laxdal said. “He’s gone from 24th or 25th up to number one in just about a month, so you can just tell he’s been solid. The guys have done a great job too of eliminating chances, but when he’s been called upon he’s making the big saves for us.”

The Oil Kings will be back in action Friday night when they visit the Kamloops Blazers before finishing their longest road trip of the season Saturday in Kelowna.
